The Shadows of Neon City

Part 1 – The Whisper in the Current

Neon City never slept. Even at three in the morning, the air between the skyscrapers vibrated, filled with the hum of advertising drones, the distant roar of traffic, and the quiet clicking of countless cameras. Mara loved this hour. It was the only time when the city seemed honest – tired, unadorned, vulnerable.

Mara sat on the roof of an old parking garage, letting her legs dangle over the edge. Next to her lay Pixel, a small fox with silvery shimmering fur and unusually intelligent eyes. Officially, he was a “biotechnical pet.” Unofficially, he was her best friend – and sometimes smarter than any human she knew.

“You hear it too, right?” Mara murmured, tapping her ear.

Pixel perked up his ears. A faint crackling came from the small implant behind his left eye. “I hear… something,” he finally said in his slightly distorted but surprisingly warm voice. “Not a sound. More like a pattern. Like a whisper in the current.” 🦊

Mara grimaced. That was exactly what she had feared. For weeks, there had been rumors in the darker corners of the net: about signals that shouldn’t exist, about data streams that changed themselves. And about people claiming the city was speaking to them.

“Okay,” she said determinedly and jumped up. “Then let’s check it out.”

She activated her bracelet, and a holographic interface flickered on. “Nova, are you there?”

A brief hesitation. Then a floating light figure appeared – abstract, flowing, constantly in motion. Nova was an AI, officially an urban assistance system. In truth, she had long ago developed her own consciousness. 😉

“I’m here, Mara,” Nova said. “And before you ask: Yes, I have registered it as well.”

Mara crossed her arms. “How bad?”

“Unknown,” Nova replied. “The signal originates from an area considered decommissioned. Sector Zero.”

Pixel let out a low growl. “Things disappear down there.”

Mara nodded. Sector Zero was a sealed-off part of the city, deep beneath the surface. Old server halls, abandoned subway tunnels, forgotten infrastructure. Officially, there was nothing left there. Unofficially, it held everything people preferred to forget.

“A little adventure to warm up,” Mara said with a crooked grin. “What do you think?”

Nova was silent for a moment. “The probability of complications is 73 percent.”

“So almost a quarter chance that everything goes smoothly,” Mara replied. “That’s enough for me.” 😄

Pixel jumped off the roof and landed gracefully beside her. “I’m coming along. If the city really whispers, I want to know what it has to say.”

The descent into the depths began through a hidden maintenance shaft. The lights grew dimmer, the air colder. Every step echoed off the walls as if someone was answering.

Suddenly Mara’s bracelet flickered. Nova distorted. “Mara… the signal is getting stronger. It… is reacting to us.”

Mara stopped. Her heart beat faster. “Reacting how?”

A deep humming ran through the tunnel. Somewhere in the darkness, a system that should have been dead for years sprang to life. Old monitors awoke, numbers running across dusty displays.

Pixel’s fur stood on end. “This is no coincidence.”

Mara took a deep breath. This adventure was bigger than she had thought. And it had only just begun.

At the end of the tunnel, a massive door slowly opened with a metallic screech. Behind it pulsed a cold, blue light.

Mara smiled – nervous but determined. “Welcome to Sector Zero,” she said quietly. 😊
