The images on the monitors flickered faster. Streets of Neon City passed by, but something was wrong. Buildings distorted, people moved jerkily, as if they were only incomplete copies of themselves.
Mara stepped closer to one of the screens. “This is not a normal archive,” she said quietly. “This is… damaged.”
Nova pulsed restlessly. “Correct. The data is fragmented. Someone tried to delete parts – but only partially. This created an unstable memory field.”
Pixel laid back his ears. “This feels wrong. Like a scar that never properly healed.” 🦊
The flickering figure still stood motionless. Its body briefly broke into individual light particles and reassembled. “Memory 4417 is loading,” it said monotonously.
Suddenly, the hall around them changed.
The concrete floor disappeared. Neon lights shone brighter, fresher. They stood in the middle of a busy square. People hurried past, laughed, talked on phones, lived. Above them, advertising drones hovered with radiant colors.
Mara sharply inhaled. “This is… a projection?”
“No,” corrected Nova. “A reconstruction. We are inside the memory.”
Pixel jumped onto a low wall and looked around. “Then we should be careful. Memories don’t like being disturbed.”
A loud bang made them flinch. At the edge of the square, a transformer station exploded. Lights flickered, people screamed and ran chaotically.
“I remember that,” Mara whispered. “That was years ago. An official accident.”
Nova was silent for a moment. Then she said calmly: “In the city archives, this event was classified as a technical malfunction. But the data here contradicts that.”
Among the fleeing people, dark, shadowy shapes appeared. They moved against the flow, purposeful, silent.
Pixel growled. “Those are not people.”
One of the figures turned its head toward them. Its eyes were empty, black like turned-off screens. “Observer detected,” it hissed.
Mara stepped back. “Nova?”
“These entities are security programs,” Nova answered. “But they have been manipulated.”
“So we landed right in the middle of an old cover-up,” Mara said dryly. “Great.” 😐
The figures came closer. The memory began to flicker, as if it was collapsing under the strain. Cracks spread through the air, like fine fractures in glass.
Pixel jumped next to Mara. “If this memory breaks, we’ll be dragged down with it.”
Mara clenched her fists. “Then we’ll fix it.”
Nova glowed brighter. “I can stabilize the missing data – but only briefly. You have to find the core of the memory.”
Mara looked across the square. In the middle stood the burning transformer station. Behind it pulsed a dark shadow, heavier than anything else.
“There,” she said. “That is the crack.”
She ran off while the memory around them crumbled. Pixel followed closely, Nova held the projection together with all her strength.
When Mara touched the shadow, a sharp pain shot through her. Images flashed through her mind – decisions that were never made public, mistakes someone desperately wanted to forget.
The memory screamed.
And then it tore apart.
Mara stumbled back into the dark hall of Sector Zero. Her heart raced, her hands trembled.
Pixel looked at her worried. “You saw something, didn’t you?”
Mara nodded slowly. “Yes. And if that’s true… then part of Neon City is built on a lie.”
Nova dimmed her brightness. “This adventure has reached a new phase.”
Mara took a deep breath and looked into the flickering darkness of the hall. There was no turning back now.
