The Shadows of Neon City

Part 4 – Beneath the Surface

The hall lay silent before them again, but it felt changed. The deep hum had grown weaker, irregular, as if something inside was struggling. Dust trickled from the ceiling, and somewhere water dripped in a slow, nervous rhythm.

Mara leaned briefly against one of the servers and closed her eyes. The images from memory would not let her go. “That was no accident,” she finally said. “Someone deliberately interfered back then.”

Pixel sat down beside her and tilted his head. “Humans often make mistakes,” he said calmly. “But they also make decisions. And decisions leave traces.” 🦊

Nova flickered weakly. “The data you touched has partially been transferred to your bracelet. Incomplete, but… relevant.”

Mara opened her eyes. “You mean I’m now carrying a piece of the truth with me?”

“Yes,” Nova answered. “And that makes you a target.”

As if that were a cue, the lights in the hall suddenly flared up. A new corridor became visible, narrow and deep, with old maintenance rails on the walls.

Pixel sniffed into the darkness. “Something is moving down there. And it’s not friendly.”

Mara straightened up. “Then we should get ahead of it.” 😄

They followed the corridor, which led them deeper and deeper beneath the city. The temperature dropped noticeably, and the sounds from above – traffic, drones, life – disappeared completely. Down here there was only them and the quiet humming of forgotten systems.

“Sector Zero is larger than the official plans show,” Mara noted.

Nova confirmed it. “There are several undocumented levels. These areas were deliberately removed from the maps.”

Suddenly the passage opened into a huge underground chamber. In the middle ran a black crack through the floor, from which a cold, blue light shone – similar to the one in the hall, but stronger, rawer.

Pixel stopped abruptly. His fur stood on end. “This is not a normal data storage.”

Mara stepped cautiously closer. “This feels like… an open secret.”

A deep rumble filled the chamber. From the crack slowly rose a figure, larger than the previous one, heavier, denser. It seemed more stable, more dangerous.

“Access denied,” a distorted voice echoed through the room. “The truth is not meant for you.”

Mara crossed her arms and lifted her chin. “Maybe not. But it’s still there.”

Pixel stepped to her side. “And if you hide it long enough, it gets angry.”

Nova glowed brighter, as if gathering all her energy. “I recognize this system. It is a control core – developed to suppress memories.”

Mara swallowed. “Then we are in the right place.”

The figure took a step forward. The ground trembled, fine cracks spread through the concrete.

Mara felt her heart beat faster – from fear, but also from excitement. Every adventure had brought her closer to the truth. And that truth was now right in front of them.

“Ready?” she asked softly.

Pixel grinned in his own, fox-like way. “For a long time.” 😊

The lights flickered. And deep beneath Neon City, something began to awaken that had been silent for far too long.
