The Shadows of Neon City

Part 5 – The Core of Silence

The first strike of the figure hit the ground with a force that went through bone and marrow. Concrete splintered, dust swirled up, and a deafening roar filled the chamber.

Mara pulled up the bracelet. “Nova, distraction!”

Nova reacted immediately. Her light split into several floating fragments that shot in a circle around the figure. “Visual disturbance activated,” she reported calmly.

The figure hesitated briefly, its form flickered. That was enough for Pixel. He sprinted off, jumped over a crack in the floor, and landed elegantly on a low ledge. 🦊

“She doesn’t respond to emotions,” he shouted. “Only to structure!”

Mara understood. “Then we bring in disorder.” 😄

She ran to the edge of the chamber where old control panels stood. Many were destroyed, but one still showed faint life. With quick fingers, she connected her bracelet to the system.

“Access blocked,” a mechanical voice sounded.

“Not for long,” Mara muttered, typing faster.

The figure turned toward her. With heavy steps it came closer, each step making the blue light from the crack glow brighter.

Nova warned: “Energy increase in the control core. If it fully stabilizes, we lose all access possibilities.”

Pixel jumped from his ledge directly onto the figure’s back. His claws dug into the flickering light. “Stability is relative!”

The figure roared – a distorted, digital sound – and struck backward. Pixel was thrown through the air but landed skillfully on all fours.

Mara gritted her teeth. “Okay, that’s enough.”

With one last command, the control panel opened. A single word appeared on the display: SILENCE.

“This is it,” Nova whispered. “The core. It filters memories by silencing them.”

Mara hesitated. “And if I deactivate it?”

“Then everything it suppressed will be released,” Nova answered. “Uncontrolled.”

The figure now stood directly in front of her. The blue light pulsed wildly, the room vibrated dangerously.

Mara took a deep breath. Some adventures demand decisions that cannot be undone.

“Then we do it controlled,” she said determinedly.

Pixel stood beside her. “Together.”

Mara placed her hand on the display. The word SILENCE shattered into countless data fragments. A dazzling light filled the chamber.

A scream tore through the room – not from the figure, but from a thousand voices at once. Memories, thoughts, truths streamed free.

The figure began to dissolve. Its form broke apart until only flickering particles remained, disappearing into the light.

Slowly, the silence descended – this time for real.

Mara sank to her knees, gasping. “Please tell me this was the right decision.”

Nova glowed softly. “Neon City remembers again.”

Pixel sat down next to Mara and nudged her with his snout. “And we’re still alive. Does that count?” 😄

Mara laughed wearily. But deep inside she knew: They had awakened something that would reach far beyond Sector Zero.

Above them, far above, Neon City flickered – and began to ask questions.
