The maintenance shaft led into a narrow supply tunnel that ran like a forgotten nerve through the underground. Old light strips on the walls glowed faintly, bathing everything in a dim yellow.
Mara slowed down as she noticed her hands trembling. “A test,” she repeated quietly. “What exactly was being tested?”
Lio swallowed. “Control. Prediction. Influence.” He nervously ran his hand through his hair. “They wanted to know how the city behaves when memories are deliberately altered. Small events first. Unobtrusive ones.”
Pixel stopped and looked at him sharply. 🦊 “And people were part of this test?”
Lio lowered his gaze. “Yes.”
For a moment no one said anything. Only the quiet humming of the old cables accompanied them.
Nova broke the silence. “The experiments you described match data fragments I discovered after the core was released.”
Mara clenched her fists. “So someone decided that memories are negotiable.”
“And that truth is optional,” Pixel added dryly. 😐
The tunnel opened into a small technical room. Dusty terminals lined the walls, some still active. Lio stepped closer hesitantly.
“I worked here,” he said quietly. “We called it the Echo Project. Officially it was about stability. Unofficially… about power.”
Mara activated her bracelet. “Show us what you know.”
Lio typed in a sequence. The screens flickered on and displayed diagrams, maps of Neon City overlaid with colored markings. Each point represented an event – small, but targeted.
“These points,” Lio explained, “are altered memories. Rewritten decisions. People who forgot something they should have known.”
Pixel let out a low growl. “That explains the emptiness I sometimes felt in them.”
Mara stepped closer to a screen. “And the core of silence was only part of it?”
Lio nodded. “It was the filter. But there are other nodes. Scattered across the city.”
Nova glowed brighter. “Multiple control points. Decentralized. That makes the system resilient.”
Mara sighed. “Of course.” 😄
Suddenly one of the screens flickered wildly. An unknown symbol appeared – an eye, stylized from lines and data.
Nova reacted immediately. “Unknown access. Someone is listening.”
Lio’s face went pale. “They have found us.”
A deep rumble went through the room. Somewhere heavy doors were being locked.
Mara straightened up. Fear was there – but she did not let it control her. This adventure had long since stopped being small.
“Okay,” she said calmly. “Then we’re no longer just listeners.”
Pixel grinned. “Finally.” 🦊
Nova gathered her light fragments. “I can locate a node. But we have to decide: escape – or confrontation.”
Mara looked at the maps of Neon City, at all the small points that had changed lives. Then she nodded determinedly.
“We go there.”
And with this decision, the next adventure took shape – one the city could no longer ignore.
