The Shadows of Neon City

Part 10 – The First Node

The tech room was still vibrating as Mara looked at the maps of Neon City. The colored dots pulsed slowly, almost alive. One of them shone brighter than the others.

“There,” she said, pointing at the screen. “The next node.”

Nova confirmed immediately. “Location identified. Public infrastructure. An old traffic control tower in the east sector.”

Pixel made a face – as much as a fox could. 🦊 “Public means guarded.”

“And old means underestimated,” Mara replied. 😄

Lio nervously shifted from one foot to the other. “If we go there, there’s no hiding anymore. This node is active. It influences thousands of decisions daily.”

Mara looked at him calmly. “Then it’s time for it to stop.”

The way to the surface led them through an elevator shaft that had been out of order for years. Nova manipulated the emergency power supply, just enough to bring them up. Metal creaked, ropes groaned.

When the hatch opened, they were greeted by the bright morning light. The traffic control tower stood like a gray tooth among modern glass buildings. Hardly anyone paid it any attention.

“Perfect place for something no one is supposed to see,” Pixel murmured.

They sneaked in through a maintenance entrance. Inside it was quiet, almost eerie. Old monitors showed traffic flows, traffic light sequences, detours – everything seemed normal.

“Too normal,” Lio whispered.

Nova analyzed the systems. “The node is hidden. It operates below the visible level.”

Mara placed the bracelet on a console. Seconds passed. Then the familiar symbol appeared: the eye made of data lines.

“There you are,” she said softly.

Suddenly the environment changed. The monitors no longer showed streets, but decisions: slow down or speed up, turn left or right, stop or go on.

Pixel felt it immediately. “That influences instincts.”

Lio nodded. “Small impulses. Barely noticeable. But they steer the flow of the city.”

Mara felt anger rising inside her. So many lives – controlled without knowing it.

“Nova,” she said calmly. “Can you isolate it?”

“Yes,” the AI answered. “But someone will notice. Quickly.”

An alarm sounded. Not loud, but clear.

“Too late,” Pixel murmured. 🦊

Mara didn’t hesitate. She confirmed the access. The room flickered, the monitors suddenly showed only raw data noise.

A jolt went through the tower. Outside on the street, traffic stalled for a moment – then continued. Unplanned. Unfiltered.

Nova reported: “The node is offline.”

Mara took a deep breath. “One of many.”

Voices echoed from below. Footsteps. Armed.

Pixel grinned. “I’d say that was our cue.” 😄

Mara cast one last glance at the silent monitors. They had cut the first thread. And she knew: Those who had spun this web would now react.

The adventure had reached a new level – open, visible, no longer deniable.
