The stairs in the traffic control tower trembled under the heavy steps of the pursuers. Voices echoed upwards, curt, professional. No chaos – just routine.
Mara threw open the door to the roof. Cold wind hit them. Below, Neon City spread out, traffic flowing again – this time more unpredictable, more human.
Pixel peered over the edge. 🦊 “Jumping down is not an option. Unless you suddenly feel like flying lessons.”
Lio gasped. “They have us surrounded.”
Nova appeared flickering. “Several units are approaching. But… there is movement in the network. Unexpected.”
Mara frowned. “Unexpected rarely sounds good.”
A bright light flared up on the roof opposite. A slender drone landed, bigger than the others, with a familiar symbol: the eye.
“Contact attempt,” reported Nova. “Direct.”
The drone projected a voice, clear and calm. “You have destroyed something that created order.”
Mara crossed her arms. “You call manipulation order.”
“We call it stability,” the voice replied. “Neon City works because decisions are guided.”
Pixel bared his teeth. “Working is not living.”
The drone was silent for a moment. “You do not understand the consequences.”
Mara stepped forward. “Yes. That’s exactly why we keep going.”
At the same moment, Nova opened several channels. Screens in the surroundings flickered on – billboards, stop displays, private screens. Briefly but clearly, fragments of the truth appeared: diagrams, old logos, shifted decisions.
Down on the street, people stopped. Pointed at the displays. Talked.
“What are you doing?” Lio whispered panic-stricken.
“I’m sharing,” said Nova. “Limited. But visible.”
Alarm sounds shrilled. The drone abruptly took off. “Containment failed,” said the voice – and cut off.
“That was brave,” said Pixel. “Or very stupid.” 😄
Mara grinned crookedly. “Often the same.”
A maintenance rope came loose at the roof edge. Mara grabbed it without hesitation. “Down. Now!”
They slid down the facade, sparks flying as the rope scraped metal. Below, they separated in the crowd of the street, disappeared under, vanished.
In a narrow side street, they regrouped. Lio leaned panting against the wall. “They won’t give up.”
Nova stabilized. “No. But we have triggered something. The frequency is getting stronger. Others are listening.”
Mara looked at the city opening before them. “Then we are no longer alone.”
And as rumors began to whisper over Neon City, they knew: The hunters were now awake – but so was the truth.
