The City of a Thousand Colors

Part 1: The Spot That Didn't Want to Be One

In the year 2125, there was a very special city.

It floated high above the clouds. And it was full of animals.

Not just any animals.

But animals from all kinds of places:

Glowing jellyfish that floated through the air. Chipmunks with neon-colored stripes. And even a robot penguin with blinking feet.

The city was called: Coloropolis.

And everything there was colorful.

At least almost everything.

Because down below, at the edge of the city, lived Kiko.

A little spotted frog.

With brown spots.

Completely normal, dull, non-glowing spots.

“Why don’t you have neon spots?” a flying fish once asked him.

“Or at least glitter?” a squirrel added.

Kiko just shrugged.

“I’m just like this.”

But that didn’t seem to be enough in Coloropolis.

Because here there was a simple rule:

The more colorful, the better.

And the more ordinary…

…the more invisible.

Kiko hopped to school every morning.

But no one sat next to him.

Not because he was mean.

But because he was “not special.”

“You’re kind of… boring,” said a chameleon once, who was constantly changing its color.

Kiko said nothing.

He liked his spots.

But sometimes…

…he wished he were a little different.

A little brighter.

A little more like the others.

That day, something strange happened.

Very strange.

As Kiko walked through the city, the colors suddenly flickered.

At first slightly.

Then stronger.

The neon stripes of a squirrel faded.

The glowing jellyfish lost their glow.

And even the blinking feet of the robot penguin…

…went out.

“What’s going on now?!” someone shouted.

The whole city fell silent.

And suddenly everything was…

…a little grayer.

Only one was still exactly the same as before.

Kiko.

He looked around.

And for the first time…

…everyone stared at him.
