The Chongqing Cyber Chaos

Part 20: The Taste of Freedom (Finale)

From the shadows of the crashed freight train emerged a gigantic figure. It was an ancient, automated guard mecha of the type "Goliath 09" – rusted, overgrown with moss, but its red targeting lenses came to life with a threatening hum. A heavy minigun barrel lazily swung towards the group. It was programmed to protect the culinary ark until the last day.

"No movement...", whispered Zhao, clutching his scrap shotgun, knowing he had absolutely no chance against this relic.

But Bao rolled past him without hesitation. His matte black armor absorbed the red light of the guardian. He did not activate his steam jets, but his audio interface and sent an ancient encryption code he had found deep in the archives of old Chongqing while scanning Madame Sheng's soup secrets.

The hum of the minigun stopped. The giant paused. "Authorization accepted: Culinary Chief Administrator registered", boomed the synthetic voice of the mecha, and the barrel lowered. The guardian stepped aside and cleared the way to the purest ingredients on earth.

"You're a genius, kid," said Mei with a broad grin, patting Bao's armor.

Three months later. Neo-Chongqing had changed.

The "Iron Duck" was history – not defeated by weapons, but by the economy of taste. With the real spices and chilis from the underground ark, Lu, Mei, and Madame Sheng had opened the city's first "open-source kitchen." They distributed the real, unadulterated recipes for free on the cyber-net. Against the taste of real broth, real Szechuan pepper, and the happiness algorithms optimized by Bao, the synthetic, overpriced food of the syndicate had no chance anymore. People flocked in masses to the new stalls. The power of the street food mafia was broken – replaced by a culinary democracy.

On the rooftop terrace of the new headquarters in Sector 7, the wok sizzled. Madame Sheng stood next to Lu, watching the sunset over the neon-lit skyscrapers.

"You have given the city back its soul, young man," said the matriarch, sipping a bowl of perfect broth.

"I was not alone," Lu smiled, looking at Mei, who sat on the railing polishing her fully upgraded hoverboard.

And Bao? The small, formerly light blue, now stylish matte black robot zipped with utmost precision between the tables. His lenses glowed a content, warm yellow.

"Analyzing city's endorphin levels... Increase by $412$ percent since implementation of the original chili component. Conclusion: Life in Neo-Chongqing is now officially delicious." He stopped in front of a guest, balancing a steaming bowl on his head and added with a mechanical wink: "Enjoy your meal. And don't forget: The sauce is the system."
