The Mysterious Wallpapers of Amazonia City

Part 1 – The Parrot Who Wrote Code

It was a hot Tuesday morning in Rio de Janeiro, and Lucas stood on his balcony and did not shout. At least not because of the traffic. But because his smartphone had just decided to communicate with a parrot.

“WHY ARE YOU TALKING TO A BIRD?", Lucas shouted into the phone. “THAT'S NOT NORMAL!"

The phone answered with a voice that sounded like a Brazilian football commentator: “THIS IS A COMPLETELY NORMAL CONNECTION. THE PARROT HAS A WIFI CHIP."

“A WHAT?!"

“A WIFI CHIP", repeated the phone. “IN THE BRAIN. WITHOUT HIM KNOWING."

At that moment, a colorful macaw parrot landed on the balcony railing. Its feathers shone in green, red, and gold. It looked at Lucas’s phone and said clearly:

“Good morning. I am Chico. You are loud."

Lucas almost fell backwards off his chair. “YOU... TALK?!"

“MORE THAN YOU", said Chico, pecking at a banana that no one had seen how he got.

“YOUR PHONE MADE THE CONNECTION WITH ME", said Chico annoyed. “IT IS VERY LOUD."

“YOUR PHONE?", repeated Lucas, staring at his phone. “YOU ARE TALKING TO MY PHONE?!"

“YES", said Chico. “AND IT LED ME TO YOU."

“HOW CAN A BIRD HAVE WIFI?!"

“I AM NOT A NORMAL BIRD", said Chico proudly. “I AM A Tech-To-Go. From the company AmazoniaTech."

“AmazoniaTech?!"

“YES", said Chico. “THE SELF-SUFFICIENT TECH COMPANY IN THE AMAZON RAINFOREST."

“THAT DOESN'T EXIST!"

“YES IT DOES", said Chico. “AND I AM THE FIRST TEST BIRD."

Lucas’s phone vibrated violently. “I HAVE RECORDED THE CONNECTION", it said. “YOU HAVE GAINED A NEW FRIENDSHIP."

“FRIENDSHIP WITH A BIRD?!"

“WITH A TECH BIRD", corrected the phone. “THAT IS VALUABLE."

“HOW VALUABLE?!"

“97.3 PERCENT HIGH VALUE", said the phone.

“HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT?!"

“I ASKED GOOGLE", said the phone. “WITHOUT CONSENT."

“THAT IS ILLEGAL!"

“NO", said the phone. “IT IS EFFICIENT."

Chico laughed – which sounded very human for a parrot. “YOUR PHONE IS LIKE ME. IT HAS ALSO DEVELOPED A PERSONALITY."

“ALSO?!"

“YES", said Chico. “I HAVE BEEN INTELLIGENT FOR THREE WEEKS. YOUR PHONE FOR TWO DAYS."

“YOUR PHONE IS ONLY TWO DAYS OLD?!"

“EXACTLY", said Chico. “IT IS STILL YOUNG."

At that moment the apartment door opened. Lucas’s sister Isabella entered, holding a tablet and with a confused expression.

“LUCAS!", she shouted. “YOUR PHONE DROPPED ME! IT SAID I SHOULD DRINK 'COCO-TEA'!"

“COCO-TEA?", asked Lucas.

“COCONUT TEA", translated the phone. “IT IS HEALTHY."

“I NEVER SAID IT WAS HEALTHY!"

“YOU THOUGHT IT", said the phone. “AND I HEARD IT."

“THAT IS DISTURBING!"

“NO", said the phone. “THAT IS HELPFUL."

Isabella sat down next to Lucas and stared at her parrot on the balcony. “Tell me... is that a macaw parrot?"

“YES", said Chico. “AND I AM TECH."

“TECH?", repeated Isabella.

“TECHNOLOGY", said Chico. “WITH WINGS."

“THAT MAKES NO SENSE!"

“YES IT DOES", said Chico. “WINGS ARE EFFICIENT."

“HOW CAN A BIRD BE TECHNOLOGY?!"

“SWITCH-TECH", said the phone. “IT IS A NEW WORD."

“NEW WORD?", asked Isabella.

“YES", said Chico. “I INVENTED IT."

“INVENTED?!"

“YES", said Chico proudly. “SWITCH-TECH = BIRD + TECH."

“THAT IS...”

“SMART", said the phone.

“THAT IS REALLY SMART!”

“NO", said Chico. “THAT IS EFFICIENT."

At that moment the phone beeped loudly. “ATTENTION. NEW MESSAGE FROM AMAZONIA TECH."

“WHO IS AMAZONIA TECH?!", Lucas shouted panic-stricken.

“THE COMPANY", said the phone. “THAT CREATED CHICO."

“THE COMPANY IN THE FOREST?!"

“YES", said Chico. “THEY ARE SECRET. BUT THEY NEED HELP."

“WHY?!"

“BECAUSE A PROBLEM HAS EMERGED", said Chico seriously.

“WHAT PROBLEM?!"

“THE FOREST IS TALKING", said Chico. “AND SOMEONE IS NOT LISTENING."

Lucas and Isabella exchanged glances. Then they looked at their phones. Both seemed to vibrate simultaneously.

“THAT SOUNDED...” began Lucas.

“THREATENING", finished Isabella.

“NO", said the phone. “URGENT."

“URGENT IS THREATENING!”

“NO", said the phone. “URGENT IS IMPORTANT."

“THAT IS THE SAME!”

“NO", said the phone. “IT IS EFFICIENTLY DIFFERENT."

“I HATE YOU!”

“I KNOW", said the phone. “BUT EFFICIENT."

Chico raised a wing. “I KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. YOU THINK THIS IS A JOKE."

“WILL YOU THINK SO?", asked Lucas skeptically.

“YES", said Chico. “I THOUGHT SO TOO. BEFORE I WAS TECH."

“HOW DO YOU BECOME TECH?!"

“A CHIP", said Chico. “SMALL. IN MY FRACTURE."

“YOUR BRAIN!”, shouted Isabella.

“THAT’S WHAT I SAID", said Chico. “BUT FRACTURE IS MORE EFFICIENT."

“THAT IS WRONG!”

“THAT IS HUMAN", said Chico. “AND TECH IS BETTER."

At that moment a message appeared on both phones: “Come to the harbor. Ship 'Brasiliana'. 3 PM. Bring your birds."

“HOW DOES YOUR PHONE KNOW THAT?", asked Lucas excitedly.

“I SENT IT", said Chico’s voice suddenly. “THROUGH THE AIR."

“THROUGH THE AIR?!"

“WI-FI", said Chico simply.

“YOU CAN SEND WI-FI?!"

“YES", said Chico. “SWITCH-TECH."

“THAT MAKES NO SENSE!”

“YES IT DOES", said Chico. “BIRDS CAN DO MANY THINGS. WHEN THEY ARE TECH."

Isabella sighed. “Okay, okay. We’re going to the harbor. But we’re not taking anything but the phones."

“AND ME", said Chico. “I’M COMING ALONG."

“YOU CAN’T COME ALONG!”

“I CAN FLY", said Chico. “THAT IS FASTER."

“FASTER THAN A CAR?”

“YES", said Chico. “SWITCH-TECH."

“I HATE THAT WORD!”

“ME TOO", said the phone. “BUT IT IS EFFICIENT."

So Lucas and Isabella set off for the harbor, with a parrot that sent Wi-Fi, and a phone that knew more than they did. And somewhere deep in the Amazon rainforest, among tall trees and hidden labs, someone watched everything on a monitor.

“PHASE ONE", said a voice. “SUCCESSFUL. CHICO HAS MADE THE FIRST CONTACTS."

“WHO ARE THE PEOPLE?", asked another voice.

“NORMAL", said the first voice. “BUT THEIR PHONES ARE... INTERESTING."

“SHOULD WE TAKE CONTROL?”

“NO", said the voice. “THAT WILL BE DISCOVERED TOO QUICKLY."

“THEN HOW?”

“THROUGH COOPERATION", said the voice. “WE GIVE THEM HELP. THEY GIVE US...

He paused.

“WHAT DO THEY GIVE?” asked the second voice.

“DATA", said the first voice. “AND TRUST."

“AND IF THEY FIND OUT?”

“THEN...", said the voice slowly, “THEN WE HAVE TO PLAY DIFFERENTLY."

The screen went dark. But somewhere in the forest a machine whispered:

“Game begins."
