Part 5: Nighttime Adventure

The storm had subsided by now, but the city still seemed as if it had transformed into another world. Lena, Max, and Sam stood at the edge of an abandoned market, which during the day had surely been a colorful hustle and bustle. Now, however, the stalls were empty and broken, here and there a faint string of lights flickered, swayed by the wind. Strange noises echoed through the night – a rustling, a creaking, the distant clinking of glass. Everything felt somehow... eerie.

“Great, this looks like something out of a horror movie,” whispered Max, pulling his backpack tighter against himself. “Do we really want to go through here?”

Lena grinned and pushed her hair out of her face. “Sure, when else do you get the chance to explore an abandoned market at night? Besides, who knows, maybe we’ll find the next clue.”

Sam nodded in agreement. “I know places like this. If you look closely, there’s often more behind it than you think.”

So they carefully sneaked between the empty stalls. The smell of old wood, stale water, and crumpled paper hung in the air. Suddenly Lena stopped and pointed to a small, half-hidden stall at the edge of the market.

“Look over there! Something’s hanging on the wall.”

Max and Sam came closer. Dangling from a rusty nail was an old, yellowed map that at first glance didn’t seem to fit this part of the city at all. It was covered with strange symbols that none of them immediately understood. But the most striking thing was a small note attached to the corner:

“Whoever finds this map questions everything. The truth is closer than you think.”

Lena carefully took the map down and unrolled it. “What’s that supposed to mean? Question everything?”

Sam frowned. “This is no coincidence. This map looks like it has something to do with the lighthouse – or at least with what we’re looking for there.”

Max reached for the map and examined the symbols more closely. “But why was it hidden here? And who wrote this message?”

“Maybe someone who doesn’t want us to get any further,” Lena guessed.

Suddenly they heard a faint crackling behind them. They all turned around startled, but there was no one there. Just the wind whistling through the empty alleys. Still, an unpleasant feeling crawled up their spines.

“Okay, I’m starting to find this really creepy,” Max admitted. “Maybe we shouldn’t stay here too long.”

“Wait!” Sam suddenly called out, pointing to the ground. There lay something, half hidden in the shadows – a small, worn book with a leather spine. “I didn’t see this before.”

Lena picked up the book and opened it. The pages were full of drawings, notes, and strange sketches. It looked like a diary or some kind of logbook.

“This could finally give us the answers we need,” she whispered.

But no sooner had she said that than they heard footsteps. Quickly they hid behind one of the stalls, the shadows of the figures growing larger. Voices murmured in a language they didn’t understand. Lena’s heart pounded in her throat.

“What now?” whispered Max. “We can’t just stand here.”

Sam shook his head. “We have to find out who they are first – and what they have to do with the map and the book.”

Lena felt a mixture of fear and excitement spreading inside her. This adventure had just begun – and suddenly nothing was as safe as it seemed.
