Part 6: The Secret Message

Hardly had the footsteps stopped, Lena, Max, and Sam breathed cautiously, but the uneasy feeling remained. “Okay, that was really close,” whispered Max, looking around nervously. “We should start thinking about how to get out of here.”

But before anyone could say anything, Max’s backpack suddenly vibrated. He reached in and pulled out a small, inconspicuous package that he hadn’t noticed before. It was wrapped in brown paper and tied with a string. No sender address, no inscription – just a red seal with a strange symbol that looked like a compass with a star in the middle.

“What the...?” Max looked at Lena and Sam. “Have I been carrying this around the whole time?”

Lena carefully took the package in her hand and turned it over. “Looks like it was left here especially for us. Maybe another clue?”

Sam pulled a small flashlight from his backpack and shone it on the seal. “The symbol... I know that. It’s the sign of an old treasure hunter guild I once heard about. They were supposedly active here in the area centuries ago.”

“Great,” muttered Max. “So we’re not just hunting an old treasure, but also in the sights of a secret society?”

Lena untied the package and carefully unfolded the paper. Inside was a crumpled parchment, on which was written in fine, almost faded handwriting:

“Whoever seeks the truth must be faster than the shadow. The treasure lies where water and sky meet. But beware the eyes that are awake in the dark.”

“Sounds almost like a treasure riddle from an adventure movie,” grinned Lena. “But what does it mean by water and sky? And who are these eyes in the dark?”

Sam frowned. “That could be the harbor – where the sea meets the horizon. Maybe we have to go back to the old lighthouse? It’s by the water, and from there you can see the sky best.”

Max nodded. “Sounds logical. But if we have to hurry, we shouldn’t waste time. Someone else seems to have caught our trail.”

Suddenly they heard the cracking of footsteps again. This time the sounds were closer, faster. “Damn!” whispered Lena. “They’re on our heels!”

“We have to get out of here, and now!” shouted Sam, pulling the two toward the market exit. “With the package and the map, we finally have a real lead. But I have a feeling this isn’t the last puzzle.”

As they reached the narrow alleys, they felt the shadows behind them grow thicker. Lena looked back once more and saw vague figures moving between the houses, barely more than dark spots in the night.

“Faster!” gasped Max. “Or we’ll be surrounded soon!”

With pounding hearts and the mysterious package firmly in hand, they ran off, the night swallowing their footsteps – but somewhere out there, the truth awaited them. And someone who would do anything to keep them from finding it.

Suddenly Sam stopped abruptly and pulled Lena and Max behind a corner. “Stop! Up ahead – do you see that? Someone just blocked the street. We can’t go any further.”

In front of them, two bright headlights shone, and a deep voice called out: “Stop! No one leaves this zone now!”

A cold shiver ran down their spines. The chase had just begun – and the game was becoming more dangerous than they had ever expected.
